Referral of cases

Most SFO cases result from initial inquiries undertaken by the various police forces who then refer the case to us.

Who else refers cases to us?

Government departments and regulatory bodies such as the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory ReformExternal site link, HM Revenue & CustomsExternal site link, Financial Services AuthorityExternal site link, (or sometimes individuals) may refer cases to us when they appear sufficiently serious or complex.

Launching an inquiry without a referral

We can launch an inquiry without a referral if there is reason to believe that a major and complex fraud has been committed.
