Data Controller information

The Serious Fraud Office is a Data Controller under the Data Protection Act 2018 and will process personal data for law enforcement purposes under part 3 of the Act. In line with part 3 section 44, the SFO has a duty to make available certain information about our law enforcement processing, which is detailed below.

Why do we process personal data?

The SFO processes personal data for the purposes of the prevention, investigation, detection or prosecution of the top level of serious or complex fraud, bribery and corruption. In addition, the SFO also pursues criminals for the financial benefit they have made from their crimes and assists overseas jurisdictions with their investigations into serious and complex fraud, bribery and corruption cases.

What are your rights if we process your personal data?

If your personal data is processed by the SFO you are a “data subject” and you have the right to request:

  • Confirmation as to whether or not personal data concerning you is being processed,
  • Access to the personal data we hold about you which would include –
    • the purposes of, and legal basis for, the processing;
    • the categories of personal data concerned;
    • the recipients or categories of recipients who have been shown your data, including other countries or international organisations;
    • the period of time for which your data will be likely to be stored, or the criteria for that determination where we cannot give a period;
  • Rectification of personal data we hold about you
  • Erasure of personal data we hold about you or the restriction of processing of your personal data

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner
